Walk into almost any freshly painted Indian home and you'll smell it: sharp, sweet and lingering for days. That smell is volatile organic compounds (VOCs) evaporating from the paint into the air you breathe.
Emulsion paint is mostly a plastic film
Standard emulsion and enamel paints use acrylic or vinyl polymers as their binder. When the water evaporates, those polymers fuse into a thin plastic skin that holds the pigment on your wall. It looks smooth and wipes clean, but it seals the wall.
Two things follow. First, the solvents and additives in that film keep releasing VOCs, most strongly in the first weeks. The US Environmental Protection Agency notes that indoor levels of many VOCs are consistently higher than outdoors, up to ten times higher, and can reach far higher levels during and after activities like paint stripping. Second, a sealed wall traps moisture behind it, which is why plastic paint blisters and peels in humid rooms and why mould grows underneath.
Lime and clay work the other way
Lime paint is made from slaked lime and mineral pigments. Instead of forming a plastic film, it bonds into the wall and slowly re-absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, turning back into limestone. Clay paints use natural clay and plant-based binders. Both stay vapour-permeable, so moisture can pass through the wall instead of being trapped.
- No paint smell. Good natural paints declare every ingredient and keep VOCs close to zero.
- Fewer mould problems. Lime is naturally alkaline, which discourages mould and bacteria.
- Easier repairs. Lime and clay can be touched up in patches without repainting the whole wall.
- A different look. Mineral paints have a soft, slightly variable depth that plastic paint can't imitate.
What about cost?
Many natural paints cost about the same as a standard emulsion for material. Mineral lime paints and decorative lime finishes cost more, but last longer between repaints and can be spot-repaired.
